My son is having his 1st bday party on Saturday and I can't decide if I should make him a cake or make cupcakes. any suggestions?

sharpeilover22 --- 14 years ago -

i love cupcakes! i think its cute if you still want a cake, to do a cake then have a huge oversized cupcake for the smashcake!

LovinMyBoys --- 14 years ago -

Yah. I wasnt sure what to do I may make a little cake and then cupcakes. that way he can smash it and get all messy.

RaeRie (Mod) --- 14 years ago -

I may make a little cake and then cupcakes.

I vote for that one. I made my daughter a carrot applesauce cake for her first 2 birthdays. It's good, and you don't have to worry about the massive amount of sugar they're getting.

LovinMyBoys --- 14 years ago -

Ohh I may have to look that up. My husband wants to make him chocolate and chocolate icing and I was like thats alot of sugar.

I second that vote!

if there will be other little ones eating you could make mini cupcakes :)

Carrot Applesauce Cake

Doesn't look too hard to make either! I vote for that too.. Smash cake & cupcakes

MrsH --- 14 years ago -

I prefer cake that way I can portion it how I want.

AuroraBorednZealous --- 14 years ago -

I did both.

I made a Wilton's Cookie Monster cake & cookie monster cupcakes too.

AB You are so talented! I love the cakes!

AuroraBorednZealous --- 14 years ago -

If you wanted to borrow my cake pan I don't mind just shoot me a PM.

It's a retired cake pan originally made in '81

I also have the elmo cake pan I made for his 2nd birthday

Those are super pretty cakes! I wonder if I'll ever find an icing I don't mind my kid eating.

Tabasco --- 14 years ago -

a big cupcake cake! and it could be a huge elmo or cookie monster or whatever he likes

Jenna --- 14 years ago -

Those cakes are awesome! How long did it take you to ice the Cookie Monster one?

AuroraBorednZealous --- 14 years ago -

OMG....I lost track of the time it took for Cookie Monster, it was over an hour since I made homemade buttercream frosting & tinting the frosting to the perfect shade of blue.

I also was scheduled for elbow surgery a month after making the cake.

Their easy enough to make...the wilton cake pans come with decorating instructions...it's just time consuming.

Have you made the homemade whipped cream icing? Its super easy and the only one that I give my son. ANd honeslty the only one that doesnt make me sick .

LovinMyBoys --- 14 years ago -

wow thats amazing. I am not that talented at all. I think we are going to do cupcakes for our guests and a small cake for him. :) I wish I could decorate cakes like that.

Agreed! I made a castle for my littlest one's last b-day and it wasn't hard.

MarineWifeAndMommy --- 14 years ago -

I love cupcakes :)

AuroraBorednZealous --- 14 years ago -

I bought all of my Wilton cake pans from e-bay, I also bid/won a vintage Sesame Street cookie decorating kit that I never had the opportunity to use...they didn't get delivered in time for his party.

thats cute!

AuroraBorednZealous --- 14 years ago -

Yeah...maybe I'll be able to try them out sometime, or I'll end up saving them for grandkids in the distant future.

kElJoY --- 14 years ago -

Cupcakes are entirely too much work decorating; at least for me. I would do just cakes; well ice cream cakes in my house but still..big and small. :)

Hmmm, I will have to look that up! Thank you!

THIS THIS THIS!!! OMG!!!! A girlfriend from another board shared this with me and it's amazing. It's so easy and if you scoop it into a ziplock bag you can even pipe it out with ease onto cupcakes (cut a bigger corner off) or write with it (cut a smaller corner off). I could never get other homemade icing to pip easily.

It's really good. I'll never use another frosting recipe.

Recipe

1 package instant vanilla pudding (whatever flabor you want. I've used many different flavors, to include banana!
1/4 C powdered sugar (I have left this out with no problems, I thought it was sweet enough already!)
1 cup cold milk
8 ounces of Cool Whip, thawed

I've used fat free and low fat milk and cool whip light and didn't notice a difference!

Mix pudding, milk and powdered sugar mix for 1 minute until creamy. Fold in Cool Whip. Spread on cake.
