i just put either a roast cut up or buy stew meat with carrots celery and potatoes in, cover with water and i add 2 packets of brown gravy mix to thicken and flavor a little about 15 mins before you serve and your good to go.

The only thing different I do is brown the meat in a skillet before adding in the crockpot. Adds a deeper beef flavor and worth the extra 10 minutes in my opinion!

I add red wine, dry onion soup mix, cream of mushroom, garlic powder and beef broth, no water, along with the usual red potatoes, onion, carrot, and meat

1 roast
carrots
potatos
large onion
1 can cream of mushroom
1 bottle of beer
cook 7-8 hours or until fork tender

The trick to making stews in the slow cooker is to brown the meat and color veggies (onions, carrots...) in oil in a medium hot pan before putting them in the slow cooker. (You aren't cooking them, just adding color which adds tons of flavor.)

Deglaze the pan with whatever liquid you are using to get all the browned bits off the bottom of the pan and add to the slow cooker. Remember to use about 1/2 the liquid if your recipe isn't specifically for a slow cooker as you don't lose as much to evap while cooking. Also, the commissary sells Reynolds Slow Cooker Bags thatl line the slow cooker and make clean up EASY.
