We are moving to Twentynine Palms in three weeks from Camp LeJeune. What base housing areas are snco? Are all housing newer or is some of it the old stuff?
What is the best advice you have about preparing for Twentynine Palms? Tia

oTBN38o --- 10 years ago -

I cannot answer the housing questions because my family live off base. But as for preparing for 29.... Well...

The beach is no longer a 15minutes drive, but a 2 hours drive.

Walmart is no longer 15mins drive, more like 30 mins from the base's main gate.

Say goodbye to one hour traffic after work for your spouse (or whomever is in the service)

hello beautiful sunsets. :-)

If you're a shop-a-holic, the nearest mall is in Palm Desert and that's a one hour drive, the locals call it "going down the hill". There's also an outlet mall, same distance but opposite direction from Palm Desert.

Weather: it's a lot similar to Jacksonville but when it gets humid, it's dry heat humid, you will feel the burn (no kidding). It does get crazy windy here during spring time(i'm not exaggerating either). The temperature will reach 115+ during summer but on some days, it's windy so you got the nice dry heat blowing at your face when you go to pick up your youngin's from school (if you have any).

That's all I can think of at the moment. Will edit and add more to this. :-)

*Edit*
similar thread, few more answers.

oh, and Welcome to 29 Palms Underground. :-)

What oTWINo said is pretty accurate. I just moved here from Cherry Point and it's a whole world of difference. I can't help much for housing as I've only been in the one I live in! Welcome to the area though!

becauseIsaidso --- 10 years ago -

The heat, wind, humidity &/or lack there of, don't bother me. We were in Yuma for many years before LeJeune. As for shopping, is a rare thing, I hate it. I try to make the best of every place we go and am sure will be fine. Just a little stressed and wanted to get some local info. Thanks for the info, feeling better, but not less stressed! Lol

becauseIsaidso --- 10 years ago -

Oh, and you are saying less than one hour (lol, just kidding. I was already warned about traffic!!!)

becauseIsaidso --- 10 years ago -

Duplicate post.

oTBN38o --- 10 years ago -

feeling better, but not less stressed! Lol

well, what else do you want to know? Are you driving or flying across country?

becauseIsaidso --- 10 years ago -

Housing is my biggest concern. Three kids, new schools, etc.
Driving with three kids, husband and two dogs. What is the best brand of ear plugs LOL

oTBN38o --- 10 years ago -

lol, portable DVD players or games. We opt to drive across country, 5yr old and a 5month old. Luckily for DH and I, the kids slept during most of the ride.

prettylady3 --- 10 years ago -

We drove with two kids, two vehicles, one of which was a Uhaul towing a third vehicle. I hope it goes well for you!

oTBN38o --- 10 years ago -

nevermind :-)

becauseIsaidso --- 10 years ago -

Nope, one big old family lovin' car time. And a teenage boy to boot!! Preteen girl, and a 8 year old girl. lol

becauseIsaidso --- 10 years ago -

We get to *** HAVE TO*** stop and see family. They are meeting us at our 1/2 way stop for a day. Thank goodness for our annual trips back home to KS, that was practice!!!

What beach is 2 hours???

oTBN38o --- 10 years ago -

*scrambles to Google 'Huntington Beach' as example*

Oh, it's a 2.5hour drive to the beach, I sorry.

Mr Lance Corporal --- 10 years ago -

Your staff so you'll get new/nice

SewnLove --- 10 years ago -

What beach is 2 hours???
We have a beach in our backyard, with all the sand, just no water.

SewnLove --- 10 years ago -

Welcome to 29 by the way.

becauseIsaidso --- 10 years ago -

SoInLove, that is what my husband is telling everyone. The beach will be in our backyard, the water, however, will be a couple hours away. Lol

You know what you guys[gals] need to all hear from me IS i am glad you wives happen to have had to move here over the years because you add your touches to the desert town area! Of course Anaheim sort of reminds of the idea too.

Plasticstars --- 10 years ago -

If you wanna get a glimpse of housing pictures usmc twenty-nine palms facebook group has albums of the insides. Many other wives have generously posted them up for you. So once you figure out what you might be able to get that might be useful if you wanna see what the insides look like.

you are getting here just in time for the flowers in coming into bloom.

Getting ready to be more outdoors with world class rock climbing near by.

I personally learned how to rock climb without ropes in places where they use ropes.

Another thing, you just may run into a "famous face" as some come to this wonderful basin to get away from the rat race. So do not be surprised.

kElJoY --- 10 years ago -

Maybe not this year. We are going into the 3rd worst drought in 50 years and the flower forecast isn't good according to reports I've seen. :(

Mary Swanson --- 10 years ago -

SNCO is Copper Canyon (the new housing), some areas of Shadow Mountain and some areas of Joshua Heights. All 3 are close to each other.

We have a 4 bedroom in Shadow Mountain, its older with only 1 car garage but it works for us and we like it.

Copper Canyon was built within the last year and are pretty nice.

I was hoping we would get some fields of poppies so I can show my son... ;(

Belle --- 10 years ago -

Ocotillo also houses SNCOs! Copper Canyon is the new neighbor, but the floor plans are horrible!
