Viacom was requiring DTV tp pay an extra $1 Billion to begin a new 5 year contract. The issue is, those channels have been losing viewers so DTV didn't see the point in paying so much more. The price they were paying Viacom was set either 5 or 7 years ago so it isn't up to today's standards but it's not worth an extra billion.
People need to get educated on this. Viacom already did this to Dish Network some years back and Dish allowed the channels to go dark. Once they did, Viacom caved and reduced their required contract amount. The deal was made.
DTV just went through this with Fox and just before deadline Fox reduced and that deal was made. It's ridiculous that people just believe Viacom is a "victim" here and get mad at DTV. No, they are using children to force DTV to pay the outrageous amount. If DTV made this deal as-is the rates would have to go up and people would be mad about that. Either way someone will be mad.
I'm a directv customer and I'm with directv on this.. They are fighting to keep our rates low. The only thing I am going to miss is comedy central.
The other complaint from directv is how much programming Viacom makes available online for free - so why should directv have to pay?
DirecTV added Disney junior today in response to some nickelodeon channel going away, sounds like an improvement already :). Nickelodeon scares me, every show seems like a bad acid trip.
I don't recall the last time I watched spike, vh1, MTV - and the other 15 or so channels incvolved are so bad I can't even find out what they are. So yeah, I don't think directv should be paying a whole lot for the dregs of basic cable
I DEMAND my TV Land to get back on there!!! It is my nightly routine to watch Threes Company and Rosanne!! :-D My daughters mad about the Nick channels that's the one they played all the old time shows like Doug, Rugrats, Kenan an Kel ect.
Yea they also turned Encore or something back on as well.
I am sooo over it!! I'm sick of netflix because I have to keep putting on a new episode every 23 freaking minutes. And I am in the middle of moving/unpacking/cleaning all by myself... It is very frustrating!
We didn't even really watch any of the channels except Comedy Central but my wife called them about an update of the issue and they gave us a free upgrade and free Starz channels for 6 months. Even if they make a deal with Viacom, we keep the free upgrades. Not too bad considering we didn't really care. I couldn't care less if they make a deal or not. Viacom is a prime example of greed and big business.
