A hiring fair will be held in Palm Desert, Calif., August 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. for veteran job seekers, active duty military, Guard and Reserve members, and their spouses. The event will be located at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, at 84245 Indio Springs Parkway, Indio, CA 92230.

This hiring event is being conducted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's "Hiring Our Heroes" program and is co-sponsored by the Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce and various Department of Veterans Affairs agencies. Hiring Our Heroes has helped more than 10,400 vets and spouses find employment since March 2011.

The event is free and walk-ins will be accepted with military ID, but you are highly encouraged to pre-register at hoh.greatjob.net. Employers MUST register by Aug 6 if they want space to recruit. So....the employers will be doing on the spot interviews/hiring? Kinda misleading, I have been to one and all the employers do is hand out thier business cards.

Sorry about that, we didn't see a question in there either. We gave out the contact info so readers could call and get answers to their questions. But, not a problem. We just called the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to ask questions about the program and the specific event in Palm Desert.
The rep at the U.S. Chamber told us that each company that signs up for the Hiring Our Heroes event has to have at least five positions open in that area in order to participate. That doesn't guarantee on-the-spot hiring, but the intent of the program is to line you up with a job. If they don't hire on the spot, you've at least received a close look and higher likelihood of being called for an interview. It's the job seeker's responsibility to go talk to the employers who are set up at the event.
We asked for tips for success for attendees and they heavily emphasized the importance of signing up online ahead of time. Walk-ins will also be accepted, but doing the online signup allows you to upload your resume to a section that only the employers can see.
They told us one story where a girl came down sick the day of the event and couldn't make it but she was called by a company a week later and hired because they saw her resume on the site.
Be sure to wear business attire the day of the event. It doesn't hurt to bring a few copies of your resume and bring a personality that will help employers WANT to hire you.
