Figured that would get people to read this! I'm currently a SSG in the Army getting out to move out to my husband (Marine) stationed in Twentynine Palms. We have two elementary school age children (5 and 6; Kindergarten and 1st grade). I'm incapable of not having a job. I've been doing some job hunting online looking for something in my field, but so far, no luck. Anyone know any places hiring?

Also, Nail salons? Hair salons? Fun things to do? Unload your advice!

So that means you qualify for the 9/11 Education Bill correct? If yes, I have more.

If you have been in the Army and you have young kids - there are a lot of VOLUNTEER opportunities in the area that would love to have your educated help!! Volunteers with kids are sparse as far as school, sports, etc. etc.

I'm jus sayin. :)

Nail salons?

Eric left the Venetian so no. However, Naturalives Day Spa does nails in a more private setting so you might want to check them out. It's a very intimate and nice place.

Hair salons?

A gazillion. You are on your own there. I go to Great Clips in YV and the boys get their hair clipped by one of those rogue Marine barbers in town.

Unload your advice!

What else do you want to know - we have loads of folks around here with free advice lol.

I do qualify for post 9/11 Education Bill, however I'm pretty sure I never converted. I kept the pre-9/11...the original MGIB. Does CA offer spouses of active duty military free college tuition? If so, the old MGIB pays you and then you pay the college. Meaning if you have tuition paid by a scholarship (no matter how it's funded), the money that would go to the college goes straight in your pocket. Education is something I want to pursue.

As far as Volunteer work, yes, I'm getting out of the Army after 10 years! I do love my job (I know I'm talking to a Marine crowd, LOL, but I really do love the Army), but I love my Marine more. I have an Army mentality, but am completely ready to become a Marine wife. I am definitely going to do whatever I can as far as our boys' school goes (Twentynine Palms Elementary) and I love sports so I'll be dabbling in that as well.

ANY advice really!! For some reason I've recently gotten into the couponing thing. There's this little sense of "woo-hoo" when I see before and after totals! LOL. Never been huge into it or been to a couponing club or anything, but it's something I'd like to try at least once. Is there anything like that there?

Oooh, what about babysitting? I love having date night with the hubs and sometimes even love taking my boys with, but there are those nights I just wanna act like a dating teenager again and go to a scary movie and cling to his arm! :) Who do you guys use?

We also have 3 dogs. An OLD Chihuahua, and two 75 pound pound mutts (best dogs in the world). When I visited, I saw a vet on the highway in the direction of Yucca. Anyone know if they're decent? Anyone know of anyone better? My dogs generally love each other, but occasionally one will bite through the other's ear, leg, chest while playing or will catch a claw wrong while wrestling, so...we like a good vet.

OH...on the sports note, good sporting leagues for the boys? Are there on base leagues or city leagues or anything like that? One LOVES T-ball/little league the other I think it's going to be good for football (he's a chubbers LOL) and I like for both to play soccer just because I really enjoy watching it.

There will be more questions, I'm sure. I'm doing research on my own, but trust the advice of people who aren't affilited with the business more than when I call and ask.

I'm not sure about all of that...but, you can definitely find out from Linda Burns at Copper Mountain College what you qualify for...she is the VA Rep for the college. What I do know though is that you CAN get paid an E-4's BAH for going to school fulltime if you qualify. Additionally, all your tuition is paid and you get a yearly book allowance. If you want to go to school, it is worth checking into. It will help you adjust financially getting out and get yourself more educated. There are also several programs out there for Vets that you may qualify; more if you are a disabled Vet. Check into it. Just have your military paperwork straight before you go. It helps weed through the process easier. It's a definite process but very worthwhile.

Yes and yes.

Good luck on your move and transitioning out of the Army to being a Marine wife lol. :)

Lots of opinions about ones around. I take my dogs to the VCA in 29 mostly; sometimes the one in YV. Personally never had an issue.

JLynn --- 12 years ago -

You can stay with the original GI bill or switch it to the new one. Once you switch to the new one you can't go back to the old. You will be paid E-5 Bah to go to school with the new GI bill. The VA rep at copper mountain keeps up with all the new info so contact her.

If you are looking for just shots or spading/neutering you can take them to the Animal Action League That link has the info in the thread.

Yup
I recommend Companion Animal Clinic in Yucca.
Hair, I like Fauna @ A Fox
Nails, Venetian or Naturalives has a new girl Brittany who is great.
There's a coupon group on FB called Money Savers - 29 Palms.
Jobs are out there, it can sometimes take time but don't give up.
As far as babysitters I'd go with someone you meet out here and are comfortable with. The CDC can recommend gals on and off base as well.
Welcome!

Thanks for all the information!

Um...do you guys get together or anything like that out there? Lunches, dinners, anyone sell Scenty or jewelry and you have get togethers to sell, have girl time, drink some wine? I sell Mary Kay (and I use the term "sell" loosely, I have a seller's kit...never used it :) ). I'm leaving all my military friends behind and we're a close knit group...a second family (only family, in some cases) so I'd like to meet fun people to do lunch dates, play dates for kids, things like that with. Do you guys do things like this?

Jennin29Palms --- 12 years ago -

Wine? I'm in! I highly suggest Edchada's yummy Margarita's, they also just started making Sangria.
If you search Mary Swanson on here she sells Scentsy. By far the best consultant out here!
FB has a cute little group called Social Butterflies 29 palms (or something like that)they post a lot of parties and events.

Mary Swanson --- 12 years ago -

I sell scentsy, have been out here the last two years. Happy to help with anything you need or any get togethers you want to do. :)

kElJoY --- 12 years ago -
