Hubby will *probably* be getting med-sep'd here in the next 1-3 months, and just trying to plan ahead a little and get some sort of outline of a moving "checklist" so I'm more prepared if this is the case. We will have a truck and plan on a DITY, so we were planning on just renting one of the big trailers to pull, what companies would you suggest?? Prices/experiences/quality/etc.? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I know there is U-Haul and Penske...but have never worked with either (or any of the other companies out there)
**Before people start B****ing, I DID try to "search" for a related topic but couldn't find anything with the "keywords" I was putting in.
We've used Penske for the large moving trucks & car trailer. They quoted us less than Uhaul for those items.
When we needed a open utility trailer the only choice we had was with UHaul. Just an FYI...Uhaul won't rent a trailer to you if you're planning on using a Explorer or Mountaineer.
Where u moving from? Make sure u take the 50% up front because they will tax the effe out of u when u get the 2nd half of the payment.. they don't tax the first 50% up front tho if u do that
We used budget and it was the cheapest but our trucks a/c kept breaking after an hour or 2 of driving...its nor fun driving cross country with no a/c in middle of august
Wait we used penske for our trip here and budget from south florida to sc..don't get me started on that hassle with budget...needless to say I had to get the better business bureau involved with budget
We are moving from 29 to Louisiana, and we want to rent one of the trailers to pull behind our truck, we don't want to rent the truck itself. 50% upfront?? Did that change recently?? My friend and her hubby (he) got out April of this year and they gave her 80% upfront and then gave her the rest when she turned in receipts and stuff...Either way...I just want to make sure we can cover the rental and food and lodging. What happens if they're 50% doesn't cover that??

I was told that you can get payment for half of your predicted weight now and the rest of it after you submit all your paperwork and all. And the first half they won't tax you on, but they tax the 2nd half (and its like 20% of the 2nd half)..
if the 1st half don't cover it, they also give you money for DLA & travel per diem too.. so it should cover your moving expenses mostly..whatever it doesn't cover, hope you have a credit card or cash to put the rest on and be prepared to wait forever to get paid for your dity move.. we turned in our paperwork on sept 14th and just got paid on nov 29th...
We used Penske, it as 200 bucks for a truck. It didnt matter what size you got. We got the biggest, I wanna say it was a 26 foot truck. We had it for 2 days with unlimited miles.
You can apply for an advance with TMO for the cost of the rental truck and such...then you can also ask for an advance through IPAC as well for the lodging food ext.....

is it better to get most of the moving money upfront or is it just better for that purpose if you havn't saved enough to pay for everything & wait for full reimbursment?
We just did a DITY move from NY to Cali. we had a 5 x 8 tralier, bought a hitch, and that was about 350. uhaul does do a mil discount if you call and schedule everything with the 1800 number online not the actual store.. its a lot too i want to say 15 or 20% Gas was the expensive part because of how much it has gone up but i know we did the whole trip for 1000 including hotel rooms. idk if any of that helps..

same, when we PCS'ed out here we had a budget truck, we where going down the 40 when ALL the lights went out! head lights, dash lights and trailer lights!!!! so we could only drive in the day time! when we got here I raised hell and they gave us 3/4 of our money back! A friend got a budget truck not to long ago when they PCS'ed and the A/C went out (in July) and I think some other issues with it, like it couldnt go any faster then 45 mph!!!
Budget may be cheaper but its not worth the hassle of having something go wrong on a cross country trip!!!!
yay!!!!! we'll prob be out by the 15th, just depending how fast the hubs can get everything done when he gets back.... my official house hunting will begin Jan! like you said Jan is the month all the craziness begins! yay!
I'm so excited! goodluck with everything! Oh & if ya need any help with the moving just let me know =) I'm super strong haha! I have tons of brown packing paper if you need any & a few empty boxes!
be careful what you offer! LOL The house I will have plenty of time to go through and start throwing away what I dont want o take with, but I will have only like 4 days to pack up and move outta the studio! I figured start moving stuff out X-mas day and I turn the keys in the the 31st! oiy!
